Worked examples: the same net price, different VAT

For an ordinary domestic standard-rated sale by a VAT-registered supplier, a net price of 1,000 becomes 1,050 in the UAE and Oman, 1,150 in Saudi Arabia and 1,100 in Bahrain, in the respective local currency. Currency values are not equivalent; these examples compare arithmetic, not purchasing power.

United Arab Emirates โ€” 5%

AED 1,000 net ร— 5% = AED 50 VAT; total AED 1050.

Saudi Arabia โ€” 15%

SAR 1,000 net ร— 15% = SAR 150 VAT; total SAR 1150.

Why removing VAT is not subtracting the rate

Saudi VAT of 15% applies to the net price. SAR 1,150 inclusive divided by 1.15 gives SAR 1,000 net and SAR 150 VAT. Subtracting 15% of SAR 1,150 would remove SAR 172.50, which is incorrect. The tax fraction of an inclusive total is rate รท (100 + rate).

Qatar, Kuwait and Iraq require a different interpretation

Qatar and Kuwait have not implemented VAT. Their zero defaults represent no-VAT illustrations, not zero-rated supplies within a VAT regime. Iraq is not a GCC member and has no general GCC-style VAT system; sector-specific taxes require separate review. Follow the country links for examples and verification sources.

Verify the current tax position and supply classification before invoicing. Calculations are estimates, not tax invoices or authority submissions. Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait currencies use three decimal subdivisions; the calculator's existing two-decimal display is not a guarantee of locally compliant invoice rounding.
